Richford's Public Safety needs are coordinated by a two selectboard member committee, chair Linda Collins & vice chair Andy Derby. They in turn as necessary interface with the Town managed Ambulance Service under the direction of Anita Sartwell. She manages the EMS personnel, administration and handles all the transport billing. They also interface with both police agencies serving the community: The Franklin County Sheriff's Department is under a town contract to provide certain law enforcement services and the Vermont State Police provides coverage outside of the Sheriff's contracted hours.
Under Vermont statute, any community that does not have its own police department will have the police protection of the Vermont State Police paid for by state tax dollars. Towns not having a formal police department may contract with other towns for coverage, with their certified town constable if their charter and voters allow, and/or with a county sheriff (as Richford has done for the past several years). Often times when a police agency knows it cannot respond in a timely manner it will call upon the United States Border Protection Services Unit stationed in Richford for first response and a backup unit they can arrive. While the Border Patrol Agents have no municipal powers they certainly have plenty of federal authority to be hands on/eyes on assistance until a state or county agency can arrive from as far away as the county seat.
